Big Cats on our Doorstep

Terry Moore, from the Cat Survival Trust just down the road from Welwyn, is coming to talk to us about this charity. Of course, I don’t know how many of you have visited this large site between Welwyn and Codicote, but I certainly haven’t so am really looking forward to this talk. I hadn’t realised that their primary purpose is habitat protection and the conservation of wild cats in their natural habitat.

The Trust set up a 10,000 acre rain forest in Argentina where the native wild cat species are protected as well as the flora and fauna of the reserve and this is now run as a partnership between the charity and the government of Argentina and I hope that Terry will be able to tell us about all the species that can be found there. I also hope that he will be able to tell us if the rather drastic economic situation in that part of the world has affected this project.

But, of course, that’s not all! Why are there wild cats living almost at the bottom of our gardens? This part of the Trust’s activities is to provide a refuge for wild cats which are longer wanted by their owners be that zoos or other collections. These premises are not open to the general public but operate on a ‘membership’ system where members and school or educational groups can be shown round; and I am looking forward to hearing more about this.
